Brain Structure and Function in Genetic Disorders

Who May Be Able to Participate?

  • Age Requirement: You or your child is between the ages of 5-50.
  • Diagnosis:
    • Confirmed diagnosis of 22q11.2 deletion, via FISH test.
    • Confirmed diagnosis of 22q11 duplication.
  • Health Criteria:
    • Has not been diagnosed with a disorder of the brain or nervous system (such as uncontrolled epilepsy, encephalitis, brain tumor, etc.).
    • Does not use drugs or abuse alcohol.
  • Language: Must be able to complete the study measures and interviews in English.

Involvement

  • Duration: Baseline participation may take between one to two days (approximately 7 hours for all study procedures).
  • Activities:
    • Paper and pencil and computer tests of memory, attention, and logic.
    • Interviews about mood, thoughts, and behaviors by a trained staff member.
    • An MRI scan at the UCLA Center for Cognitive Neuroscience.
  • Medical Record Review: Includes information about birth and medical history.
  • Optional Samples: Blood or saliva sample.
  • Follow-ups: Some procedures will be repeated at 2 follow-up timepoints.
  • Voluntary Participation: All participation is completely VOLUNTARY. You may withdraw from the study at any time without any financial obligation.

Compensation

  • Full Participation: Compensated up to $320 for full participation in all of the study visits.
  • Initial Evaluation: If not eligible for the study, you will be compensated $20 for your time.

Benefits

  • Reports: After each visit, you will receive a report summarizing findings, including scores on assessments, recommendations, and a copy of the MRI scans.
  • Risks: There are minimal risks involved with participating in this study.
